Things we want to get done

Project List.

In here we keep the things that require time and expertise to get done. It's kind of a wish list relating to things that will just take time to do, and not necessairly money. I will try to list what the trade value is - and then list things we can trade back. This page is rather raw and mostly for people who want to do work for trade on some Mono NeXTStations I have. Also the times and the trade values are all negotiable. What I want to do is to try to isolate tasks for all that have asked and then work out deals for completing those tasks. I'm asking people to submit bids (i.e. how much trade value they want - I value the hardware @ $10/hr tradevalue) and then I'll negotiate/decide who gets what task, in trade for what. This is very difficult to accomplish in my mind since It is hard to agree to something that isn't yet in front of my eyeballs for something that is (hardware or software - software is easier than hardware in many cases). I'm just going to say a prayer that it will all work out quite well - and everyone will be happy!!

ChannelU Logo

I'm willing to entertain a few ideas here but my origional vision is of 3D lettering with black background. The ChannelU logo should simply be 3D Channel with the following animated U. I really want the text to be very deep 3D - I was looking at vertically stretched (2:1) Linotext. Gold semi-metal with full reflections, General lighting with a light source straight behing the n's in the Channel part. I want to see a lense flare from the light peeking through the Channel part.. The U would be similiar but I want it to start transparent, and alone in a black field (or nearly transparnent - hint of gold - black back ground). Then over time is should become less and less transparent until it simply appears gold. At that point two gold wires should attach to the right and left side of the U and as this happens a little spark can be seen between the wire and where it attaches to each side of the U. When the wires attach the top of each side of the U should start to glow. The Right side should be a pinkish white (if it can be rainbow of pastels that would be cool). The other should be a dark purple or rainbow of primary (darkly colored - almost muddy). The 'charge' should build up until a lightning stroke shoots back and forth across the top of the U. Then the wires disconnnect and the U rotates 180 degrees gives a full frame light flash (as if the U is the source of the light but it eventually fills the entire frame with light). Then the frame gets dark and it all starts over again. Size is roughly 140x120 or whatever makes the U fit with the Channel to make ChannelU. I really was going to composite a real lightning bold from some video footage I'd captured from either my Hi-8 or TV. (I did shoot some Hi-8 footage as storms are moving in.

NeXTCube Logo (5 sides)
1 with U of ChannelU on it.

The NeXT Cube would have the NeXT Logo on 5 sides with the N - e - X - T Logo coming off a bump map of the letters (i.e. the letters are slightly raised on the cube say 1/10 or 1/20th length of the side of cube raised on surface - i'm not sure this will be visible). Then as the cube rotates (pick some wild rotations directions - theta and phi simultaneously) the letters would glow and fade - in conjunction with the Lightning stoke of the U on the last side - which the animation would stop and show the lightning stroke and then start rotating again pause at a NeXT side then rotate around and stop at the U (back and forth).. The U needen't be as elaborate as the U LOGO but it should be easy to use the animated gif and map it as a texture on the Cube with a simple U bump map.

AntCam Logo

The antcam will be done on a mobius strip in escher fashion I may actually posterize the output and have the posterization fade in and out. This should be easy with a video sequence provided I can get my ants to cooperate and I merge multiple trips so that it appears many ants are on the strip. I think the animation of the ants would be too hard for a 3D animator to make look lifelike. I may initially use a static image of a Escher Type mobius with Ants on it from a t-shirt I have. The t-shirt is quite faded. I can scan the shirt but the image needs quite a bit of touch up work, but a good Graphic Artist. The full blown animation will be done with a made mobius and some ants when I get a chance. To design it for a render may take too much time though one would only have to make one ant and the mobius.

2-4 hours

Animated 3D alphabet

Animated alphabet so I can have paragraph header lettering. The alphabet would be in same Gold metal as ChannelU. I like Linotext but it might not work for 30x20 etc. image sizes. The letters would rotate strangely for 1/2-1/3 of the animation and then lock into place and just sit there maybe a bit of a flash for 1/10th of the animation only to repeat.

Animated NeXT Flag

Animated NeXT Flag. I have recently obtained an authentic NeXT Flag. I think it may have actually flown over NeXT in Redwood. The flag hangs vertically not horizontally. I want the same thing animated with ripples. It uses the NeXT logo and hangs vertially rather than flapping horizontally.

6-24 hours

Turbo Software Logo

A logo for Turbo Software which I wanted to be a morph of a Porsche Turbo into the 3D word Turbo. Have the Porsche flying through the air and landing on the Pillowy word Software (3D cloud like pillows)..

Rework look and feel of ChannelU.com Website

Basically Adam suggested that he could also rework the look and feel of Channelu.com site. He had said this might be done by 27-28th of June - but it might also take longer. I'm not sure what he has in mind but I look forward to seeing what he's thinking.

1-2 hours

WWWcount2.4 - Counter modifications

I'm still considering the complete modifications I want on the counter. But the main one which I can see should be pretty easy is to change the boolean incr= value to an integer that can add some new functionality to the counter. Namely 0=don't ever increment, 1=increment only if IP mask comparison & page update IP comparision succeed, 2=increment always unless IP mask comparison is true, 3=always count, etc.

2-4 hours

WWWcount2.4 - Counter modifications

Another modification I'm thinking about is to try to figure out how to implement the number of voyeurs on the AntCam pages. I simply want to know the number of people that have visited - not how many times the page has been loaded etc. This is tricky since Ideally I'd like to know the IP and the username to determine this. I don't care if the person comes back two weeks later etc. These should be remembered. I'm considering a modified data file structure that will have counter.ip, counter.dat rather than counter.dat having #:IP(last hit from). I'm still thinking about performance issues on this.

24-48 hours

Improved NeXT FAQ

Basically I really want to put together all of the FAQ information - and information from Newsgroups to make a new FAQ information tree. Included in this is a complete web search for all the web pages that have NeXT stuff in them. I'll probably be doing this since it's a big job.

NeXT Specific information

This would include installation information, extra hardware information, links to a schematic of a 68040 25Mhz cube board I have, along with a link to the diagnostic code (diag040) I have. Lots of images.

NeXT Laser Printer Pages

These pages need to be reworked to accomodate smaller browser sizes, and the jpegs need to be fixed on the Expeller Gear so they arn't interlaced jpgs (insanely slow on black). Also breaking up the pages a bit would be extremely helpful along with a pdf version for downloading and printing.
