Well I finally have my own Nitro! Ironically long ago I had offered Ben Black $4K for this Nitro Turbo System. To make a long story short he ended up selling it to someone else w/o talking to me. I now know the price was he sold it for was 4.4K. Won't say what I paid for it ;).

The Nitro board fits into the CPU slot of NeXT Turbo Systems and boosts performance on cpu intensive tasks. On this board is a 68040 40Mhz cpu and 128K of 4-way set-associative cache and a few ASICS to provide the interface (asyncronous) glue to the 33Mhz motherboard bus. Below are a couple of other images I took.

Front
512x384 = 80KB
2048x1536 = 200KB

Back
512x384 = 80KB
2048x1536 = 200KB

In Slab
512x384 = 80KB
2048x1536 = 200KB

How many Nitros exist?

Personal e-mail from someone who for now shall remain nameless "there was more than 5". He had one, the release control guys had at least one for builds, there was one around that was used by the NRW group and later for porting cross builds, Steve Jobs had one in his NeXT for a long time, and there were various versions around in hardware. He also says he thinks a few were given to important customers as part of trials.

Because of the above and many other reasons for now I am bracketing the number as more than 5 and less than 20 working prototypes. There may be more non-working prototypes out there. As I certianly have one.

  1. 5 - David Evans
  2. 7+ - Seth Moribato
  3. 7 - Chris Douty
  4. 5+ - Gian-Paolo D Musumeci
  5. 10 - David Evans
  6. ~24 - Brian Southerland
  7. 50? - David Evans
