The NeXT Optical Drive is quite susceptible to dust and excess heat. Proper cooling and cleaning is needed to assure proper operation.

It is important to remember that this drive and it's interfaces were designed more than 10 years ago and if you think about it it's a miracle the drives still work today. This is a credit to the NeXT Hardware engineers that indeed made a computer for the 90's.

Eventually we will have a step-by-step disassembly and cleaning procedure for these Optical drives up but for now we simply put up a few images for you to peruse.

Many common problems will be addressed, such as:

1)      Drive doesn't power up.
How can I tell if the drive is dead or not.

Is there a fuse in there - that can be
      replaced.

2)      Drive powers up - and will accept and eject
      disks but won't spin up.
      Is my drive hosed?

3)      Drive powers up - spins up - accepts a disk
but after spinning up and down a few times
      ejects the disk.

Drive is dirty follow cleaning procedures

4)      I see numerous console Media error
Messages when I attempt to read or write
from a disk. How can I recover my data?

5)      Should I still use my Optical Drive or seek
      a suitable replacement.

Try to find a newer backup or archival
      solution. Copy everything on Optical
      to that solution.

6)      How do I hook up two Optical Drives
      Simultaneously
