| This is a copy of the 68030 Cube Motherboard on page 7 in the "NeXT Decade" booklet. You can clearly see the 16 30pin slots which are populated with RAM. You can also see the 3V battery, and the ROM chip to the left of the metal strip dividing the board into right and left sections. The Custom LSI chips are designed to 1 control the NeXT Magneto-Optical drive (mechanism made by Canon I believe), and 2 to handle the 12 I/O DMA channels for all the I/O devices. The motherboard also sports an integrated DSP56001 Signal processor, onboard video, ethernet, SCSI, 2 serial ports, and a printer port. Most 030 boards didn't ship with the NBIC Chip installed but simply had a socket in the place of the chip labelled 1. The NeXTBus Interface is essentially a NuBus interface but was running @ 25Mhz vs 10Mhz in the Mac. |
